WATERLOO - Joyce Sommer, 83, of Waterloo, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, at Martin Health Center of Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls.

She was born March 13, 1931, in New Hampton, daughter of Gerhard B. and Margaret Immermann Kerkhoff. She married Forrest Baker on May 12, 1956, in Austin, Minn.; he died Jan. 24, 1987. She married Leonard Sommer on Oct. 8, 1988, in Waterloo; he died Oct. 7, 2013.

Joyce graduated from Fredericksburg High School, Fredericksburg, in 1948. She was a clerk at the Waterloo Credit Bureau for three years, retiring in 1984. She also had worked at JC Penney Co. and Schoitz Memorial Hospital, and was a member of Linden United Methodist Church.

Survived by five sons: Peter (Coral) Baker of Redding, Calif., Larry (Lauraine) Baker of Waterloo, Lee (Sharon) Baker of Peoria, Ill., Lynn (Pearl) Baker of Cotter, Ark., and Allen Baker of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Lillian (Pat) McFall of Windsor Heights; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Sandra (Jerry) Mahan of Jerico and Lynette (Harry) Banks of Grundy Center; and a stepson, Cory (Cortney) Banks of Dubuque.

Preceded in death by a sister, Lorine French

Family services: will take place at a later date, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo. Her body was donated to the University of Iowa. Lock Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the church or River Hills School.
