WATERLOO - David LeRoy Derifield, 83, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital of a massive heart attack.

He was born June 27, 1931, in Mount Auburn, son of LeRoy David and Edna May Thomsen Derifield. He married Oleta Louise Holland on June 19, 1954, in Bakersfield, Calif.

David worked for Rath Packing Co. and then John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps as a mechanic. He returned to working at John Deere, retiring in 1985.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Diana (Ed) Sabin of Syracuse, N.Y., and Connie Mackey-Derifield of Cedar Falls; a son, Rick (Diane) of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bette West of New York and Julia Hertzberg of Waterloo; two half sisters, Diane Lutzen and Darlys Martinez, both of Waterloo; and a half brother, Danny Derifield of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; a half brother, Darwin; a sister, Dela Kimball; and a great-grandchild, Justin Sabin.

Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service. There will be no service.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

David loved to bowl and tinker with tools, fixing and making things and he loved his Iowa Hawkeyes. Oleta will remember him as her ornery cuss of 60 years who would help anybody in need of a hand.
