FAIRBANK - Wallace Fred "Wally" Kaufman, 74, of Fairbank, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., from complications of lung cancer.

He was born June 6, 1930, in Eagle Center, son of Frederick Felix and Marie Margaret Steils. He married Mildred Drahos on Feb. 9, 1948, at St. Johns Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Kaufman attended school in Brandon and Eagle Center, and was a retired farmer. He had served on the Wapsie Valley School Board for eight years; was an Honorable Life Time Member of the Knights of Columbus, having been a member for 54 years, also a trustee; was on the committee for the Buchanan County ASCS; was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters; served on the board for the Fairbank Senior Housing Development; and was a Crows Hybrid dealer for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Dianne (Joe) Rubino, Donna Costello (Dean Mangrich) and Karen (Kevin) Coffin, all of Fairbank, and Elaine (Charles) Henry of Broomfield, Colo.; two sons, Kevin (Denise) of Fairbank and Mark of Waterloo; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his mother of Fairbank; four brothers, Jim and Jerry (Wanda), both of Fairbank, Jack (Nancy) of Cedar Rapids and Tim (Shar) of Norfolk, Neb.; and three sisters, Connie Broell of Waterloo, Susan Thompson of Eagan, Minn., and Mary Kay Kaufman of Decorah.

Preceded in death by his father; a son-in-law, Mike Costello; a granddaughter, Marie Coffin; a great-granddaughter, Miranda Davidson; and a brother-in-law, Jim Broell.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Woods Funeral Home, Fairbank, with a 4 p.m. rosary by Knights of Columbus Council No. 1161 of Fairbank and a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Fairbank Public Library or Fairbank Fire Department, in lieu of flowers.
