WATERLOO - Carsten Donald Steen, 89, of Waterloo, formerly of Decorah, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

He was born June 30, 1925, in rural Bethel, Minn., son of Carl and Delia Vick Steen. He married Beverly Anderson on June 6, 1959, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Carsten graduated from Canton High School in 1944 and then served in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He owned a taxi company, an ambulance service and a Conoco station, all in Decorah. In 1958 he moved to Waterloo and began working as a machinist at John Deere Tractor Works, retiring in 1987.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Cheri (Robert Nemmers) Steen of Waterloo and Lori (Matthew) McCallum of Denver; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Arthur of Marion and Lester of Ham Lake, Minn.

Preceded in death by a brother, Merlin; a sister, Crystal Spilde; a brother-in-law, Myron Spilde; and three sisters-in-law, Louise, Peggy and Ardis Steen.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Decorah Lutheran Church, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah. Visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
