Gerald “Jerry” L. Olson, 81, of Waterloo, died Thursday, September 2, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

He was born on April 21, 1923 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of George W. and Fern (Herrick) Olson.

He married Phyllis Lown on July 11, 1942, in Lancaster, MO. She died in March of 1968. He later married Lois Jean Perry on June 18, 1983, in Waterloo, IA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II.

Jerry worked for the Waterloo Fire Department for forty years, retiring as Chief of the department in 1986. He was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church in Waterloo, a lifetime member of International Association of Fire Chiefs, a member of Iowa Retired Fire Chiefs Association, Iowa Fireman’s Association, and Elks Lodge.

Survived by his wife, Lois; four daughters: Linda Pilipchuk and her husband Richard, of Waterloo, Loretta Krueger and her husband James, of Brownville, NY, Jane Fredberg and her husband David, of Rogers, MN, and Kathy Slaikeu and her husband David, of Waterloo; two sons, Larry Olson and his wife Lori, of Springfield, MO, and James Olson and Jackie Derrick, of Dike, IA; two step-daughters, Sheryl Weaver and her husband David, of Gig Harbor, WA., and Penny Winkelman and her husband Mike, of New Hartford, IA; step-son, Mark Perry and his wife Lori, of Dysart, IA; twenty-three grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, George W. Olson Jr., of Beloit, WI., and Ronald Olson, of Waterloo; and sister, Arlene Petersen, of Waterloo.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; and granddaughter, Jennifer Olson.
