WATERLOO - Richard B. "Dick" Haggin, 83, of Waterloo, formerly of Des Moines and Marshalltown, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Affinity House of natural causes.

He was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Marshalltown, son of Howard L. and Edythe L. Butson Haggin. He married Merna L. Jaquis on Aug. 26, 1956, in Des Moines.

A graduate of Marshalltown High School, Dick worked at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 30 years, retiring in 1987 as a tool and die maker. He served in the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command. He was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church, where he was Sunday School superintendent, volunteered as a damage assessment specialist for the American Red Cross and was a member of UAW Local 838.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Eileen (Gene) Cahall and Georgia (Darrell) Arant, both of Goose Creek, S.C., and Leslie (Dwight) Haverkamp of Dumont: 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Haggin of Livermore, Calif.

Preceded in death by a brother, Glen.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Waterloo First United Methodist Church, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Hawkeye Chapter of the American Red Cross or the church.

Dick was awarded the Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in 1998 and was nominated for Cedar Valley Mayor’s Volunteer of the Year in 1998.
