Mark was born on Oct. 16, 1943, in Waterloo, the son of Arlin and Lucile (Peters) Matthias. Mark was six years old when he attended the Iowa School for the Deaf. Mark lived and learned in the Blind/Deaf Department of the school for 10 years. Mark returned to his farm home near Readlyn, until he moved to Bethesda Lutheran Home, Watertown, in January 1973. Mark was a hard worker and enjoyed doing many jobs at Bethesda Day Services. He loved eating and spending time with his family. His big screen TV gave him and his housemates so much enjoyment. Mark was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, and later became a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Watertown. Being the eldest of seven, Mark taught many life lessons: Be respectful of individual differences, be patient, make the most of what you are given, accept the guidance of others, love unconditionally.

Anyone who had the honor of knowing Mark will never forget him. He is now perfect!! Rest, rest sweet Markie. He has gone to join his father and mother “Mama” and his beloved sister Ruth.

Survivors include three brothers, John (Anne) of New Hampshire, David (June) of Missouri and Daniel of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mary (Gene) Traetow of Iowa and Debra (Bob) Stwalley of Colorado; aunts Joyce (Dean) Larsen and Ruth Steinbronn; he will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and his many friends at Bethesda Lutheran Communities.

Memorials may be made to Bethesda Lutheran Communities. The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Bethesda Lutheran Communities for their kindness and compassion through the years.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Bethesda Lutheran Communities in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. David Groth and the Rev. Dennis Kneer presiding. A family memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Klinger, at a later date. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Klinger.
