CEDAR FALLS - Robert Douglas Ferson, 90, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, May 1, 2009, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

He was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Tripoli, son of Fredrick and Emma Stange Ferson. On Sept. 23, 1940, he married Velma Grahlman. She died Nov. 5, 2004.

Mr. Ferson served in the Army Corps, owned a restaurant in Hawkeye and drove a school bus. In the early 1950s he and his wife moved to Waterloo, where he worked for the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 1972. After his retirement, the couple wintered in Texas for 22 years. He was a longtime member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, Waterloo.

Survived by three daughters, Marlys (Andrew) Schrag of Sacramento, Calif., Barbara (John) Rich of Sumner and Debra Ferson of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Patricia Schrag, Robert Schrag, Michael Schrag, Stacy Lemke and Kristen Lemke; and three great-grandchildren, Courtney Schrag, Ashlee Schrag and Katlynn Eilhron.

Preceded in death by three brothers, Durwood, Kermit and Keith; and a sister, Ardith Soldwich.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Waterloo Post 1623 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
