WATERLOO - Raymond C. "Ray" Hoppenworth, 85, of Waterloo, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at Sunrise Hill Care Center, Traer.

He was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Douglas Township, Bremer County. He married Edith G. Arneson on Aug. 15, 1948, in Decorah. She preceded him in death July 19, 1998. He married Edith Decker on Sept. 25, 1999, in Winthrop. She preceded him in death July 23, 2005.

Mr. Hoppenworth worked as a machinist at Waterloo Industries for 36 years, retiring on Jan. 4, 1985. Many of those he served as secretary-treasurer for the union. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a P.O.W. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years. He loved to dance with Edith.

Survived by two daughters, Linda (Dennis) Craun of Waterloo and Julie (Ray) Trent of Converse, Texas; three stepsons, Bill Decker of Delhi, Paul (Kathy) Decker of Dubuque and Dennis (Patty) Decker of Aurora, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Pam (Jim) VanEtten of Newhall; four grandchildren, Dennis Jr. (Pam) Craun of Waterloo, Lori (Jeff) Heimbuck of Des Moines, James (Amie) Trent of Chelsea, Ala., and Wendy Trent of Cibolo, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Kayla and Daniel Craun, Sierra Heimbuck and Jamie and Riley Trent; and a brother, Everett (Dorothy) of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; both wives; a grandson, Daniel Craun, in infancy; a brother; and three sisters.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity American Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
