[Waterloo Daily Courier, Tuesday, April 25, 1893, Waterloo, Iowa]

News was received this afternoon of the death of Nick Roberts, one of the early settlers of this county, who lived about a mile northeast of Gillbertsville.

There are two stories in regard to. the cause of his death, both of which were brought by people who came from Gilbertsville. One is that he was found dead in his bed this morning and that death was supposed to have been caused by heart disease. The other story is that his death was caused by taking a dose of medicine that had been prepared for a horse, by mistake for some that he was accustomed to use.

He was engaged in hauling yesterday, so the story goes, and was taken with cramps last night. He was subject to such spells and had some medicine at hand which he used in such cases. There was also some horse medicine in the house and, by mistake, he took a dose of it with fatal results

Deceased was about 75 years old and came to this county in 1854, at the time the people came who founded the town of Gilbertsville. Mr. Roberts settled on a farm near by and has resided there ever since.

He leaves a wife and quite a large family of children.
