LA PORTE CITY - Shirley J. Huisman, 68, of La Porte City, died at home Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.

She was born July 3, 1946, in Waterloo, daughter of Luther W. and Geraldine F. Stokes Pierce.

Shirley graduated from Waterloo's West High School in 1964. She worked for Herrick Refrigeration in Waterloo and owned and operated Huisman Funeral Home in La Porte City from 1976-2006 with her husband, Dennis.

Survived by her husband, Dennis, of La Porte City; a daughter, Tamara Beckham (Michael) White of Freeport, Ill.; a son, Chris (Heather) of La Porte City; five grandchildren, Casey, Joshua, Zachary, Ryan and Dominic; three great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Zander and Ariana; two sisters, Leona (Dennis) Lovejoy of Arkansas and Barbara (Tom) Balvanz of Waterloo; and a brother, William Pierce of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, Waterloo, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at La Porte City Funeral Home and also for an hour before services Wednesday at the chapel. La Porte City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening, shopping, cooking, playing online games, but most importantly she enjoyed spending time with her family.
