Helen Pedersen of Waterloo, passed away peacefully at Oakdell Cottage, her family summer home on Lake Okoboji on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014.

Helen was born Sept. 29, 1918, in Marshalltown, the daughter of Lacey and Iva Smith Patterson. She married William R. "Bud" Pedersen on Oct. 12, 1940, in Marshalltown, who died Jan. 2, 1993. Helen graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1937 and attended Grinnell College.

She was a member of First Congregational Church and PEO Chapter FE, which were her mainstays through life. Bud and Helen had many wonderful friends in Waterloo; Iowa was always where she wanted to be. She loved her friends who shared the monthly potluck -- the Leightys, Faxons, Driers, Evans and Jenkins -- and her wonderful friends around the family home on Woodstock Road as well as dear neighbors in Okoboji.

Survived by two daughters, Barbara McKlveen of Bend, Ore., and Diane Thompson of Montrose, Colo.; two sons, David Pedersen of Telluride, Colo., and John Pedersen of Denver, Colo. Helen's grandchildren are Susan Anderson of Ames, Laura Blossey of Bend, Rosalind Thompson of Boston, Monica Cunningham of Mount Vernon, Mo., Kami Kuhlman of Omaha, Neb., Alex and Emily Pedersen of Westminster, Colo., Melinda Pedersen of Denver, Julia Pedersen of Crested Butte, Colo., Niki Pedersen of Los Angeles and Olivia Pedersen of Portland. Her great-grandchildren include Eva, Dani and Jesse Anderson, Rowan and Peyton Blossey, Tyler Pedersen (who always made her smile!) and Ebisu Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Pedersen; her brother, Warren Patterson; and two sisters, Margaret Lake and Adelaide Brown.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, W. Fourth Street and South Street, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday for an hour before the service at the church.

Memorials to may be directed to The Dickinson County Nature Center.
