CEDAR FALLS - Mary Jean Logan Sweet, 90, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Western Home Communities Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center.

She was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Ruthven, daughter of Richard L. and Hazel E. Stanton Logan. She married Homer C. Sweet on Nov. 4, 1945, in Ruthven.

Mary Jean graduated from Ruthven High School in 1941 and earned her bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa. During World War II, she received Curtiss-Wright Engineer Cadette Training at Iowa State University, after which she worked at Curtiss-Wright in St. Louis, building airplanes for the war effort. She was a homemaker, writer, award winning poet, and author of two books of poetry and "William Sturgis: First in Cedar Falls."

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls, where she served as president of United Methodist Women.

Survived by her husband; four sons, Timothy (LuAnn) of De Soto, Richard (Karin) of Princeton, Michael (Diane) of Quebec, Canada, and Stanton (Cynthia) of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Mary Ann (Jorge) Ramirez of Oceanside, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Nathan Sweet, Christa Sweet, Jessica Sweet Lumbard, Christopher Sweet, Neil Sweet, Dominique Sweet Sample, Samantha Sweet, Kimberly Ramirez, Ashley Sweet Mattson, Devin Sweet and Tyler Sweet; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Willoughby of Cedar Falls; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Logan of Newton; four nieces, Cathy Willoughby, Cindy Eichman, Cary Darrah and Diane Logan; and two nephews, Clark Willoughby and Edward Logan.

Preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Logan.

Memorial services 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, with inurnment at a later date in Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Historical Society.

Mary Jean served many community organizations including PEO, as a board member for the Cedar Falls Historical Society, and creative writing teacher for the Hearst Center for the Arts.
