Ethyl May Crosswaite, 96, of Waterloo, died Dec. 26, 2008, at Chateau Le Petite board and care home in Los Angeles, CA, of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 17, 1912, in Waterloo. She earned a Teaching Certificate from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1932 and in 1939 married Glenn Crosswaite, a jazz saxophone player, linotype operator and custom tailored suits salesman. The two built their dream home in 1952 and lived in it almost until their deaths. Beyond raising their two daughters, Ethyl May worked for 10 years at the Waterloo Savings Bank, 10 as Program Director at the YWCA and 10 at a gift shop in Cedar Falls. She was known for her skill in gardening, flower arranging, needlework, baking and entertaining, and for sharing her love and knowledge of these with others. She was active in Garden Club and PEO and read avidly about business and political issues.
Ethyl May will be remembered most, though, for her character. She was a portrait of unconditional love, grace and encouragement; contentment, gratitude and trust in the circumstances of her life; quiet courage and strength in adversity; and caring service to others. In these ways and more, she honored God and blessed those who knew her.
She is survived by daughters Lynn Crosswaite (Dan Turrett) of Los Angeles, CA, and Carol Corley (Barton Corley) of Little Rock, AR, as well as three stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Glenn, sisters Lucy Jane Parrott Lockwood and Darlene Havenstrite Cooney, and parents Jacob Jay and Maeble Miller.
