WATERLOO - Irene Hurd, 89, of 1119 Kent Circle, died Thursday (March 28, 1996) at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel On Kimball. Burial will be in the Hudson Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the chapel and also one hour before services on Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Sterling College, Sterling, Kan., in her memory.

Irene Hurd was born Jan. 12, 1907 in Cedar County, Stanwood, daughter of Walter M. and Otheol Easterly Kester. She married Lueman J. Hurd in 1961 in Garner. He died in 1975.

Irene was a school teacher for 43 years, teaching at Shell Rock High School and Junior High in Estherville and Fort Dodge, retiring in 1972. She was a life member of the National Education Association.

She is survived by one brother, John of Forest City; two sisters, Gladys Stein of Reinbeck, and Miriam Mills of Freeport, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Howard and James; and three sisters, Mary Kester, Hazel Fulton and Essie Holmes.
