[Waterloo Evening Courier, Saturday, March 3, 1917, Waterloo, Iowa]

John J. Weller, 90, one of Black HawK County's pioneer citizens, died at his home. 803 Randolph Street, at 4:30 p.m. yesterday. Altho in poor health for some time, his death was a shock to relatives and friends. Yesterday morning he complained of severe pains in his head. A physician was summoned and administered a hypodermic. Mr. Weller grew gradually weaker and passed away without, regaining consciousness.

Mr. Weller was born on a farm in Somerset County. Pennsylvania. Dec. 23. 1826. He spent his early life there, receiving his education in the county school. March 19, 1848, he was married to Miss Anna Marie* Scott who preceded her husband in death three years ago at the age of 86. Had Mr. and Mrs. Weller lived until March 19, they would have celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Weller came to Black Hawk County in 1862, locating on a farm in Orange Township, four miles south of Waterloo. He immediately took his place in the community as a substantial citizen and made many friends. In 1901 Mr. Weller retired and moved to Waterloo. He made his home at 803 Randolph Street. When Mrs. Weller died three years ago a daughter, Mrs. S. H. Bashor, gave up her own home to become housekeeper for her father.

In the death of Mr. Weller the First Brethren Church loses one of its most devoted and faithful members and workers. He was greatly interested in church work, especially as it pertained to the development of the city, and was a leader in every movement for a better Waterloo.

Mr. Weller retained his genial disposition and unfailing humor to the last. He chatted with his physician yesterday until he became unconscious.

Mr. Weller loved outdoor life and regretted the severe winter which kept him confined so much of the time. Last Thanksgiving he drove 13 miles in the cold to eat dinner with friends who lived in the country.

He is survived by six children: Mrs. S. H. Bashor, Waterloo; Mrs. J. C. Stoy, Waterloo; Mrs. R. J. Gillin, Doon; W. W. Weller, Mankato, Minn.; J. L. Weller, Waterloo, and Mrs. W. K. Clark, Fort Dodge. Sixteen grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be from the First Brethren Church Monday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. W. H. Beachler officiating. Burial will be in Orange Cemetery in Orange Township, where Mrs. Weller was laid to rest three years ago.
