PIONEER OF FIFTY-FIVE

John Carncross, Living Near Dunkerton, Succumbs to Old Age and Kindred Ailments.

John Carncross, one of the wealthiest and most highly respected farmers of Lester Township, died at his home three miles north of Dunkerton, Wednesday, January 13, of old age and inflammatory rheumatism. Deceased was one of the early settlers of that section, of Black Hawk County, having lived in Lester Township since the fall of 1855. During the long term of years covering his residence there, John Carncross became known as one of the most substantial and upright farmers, who by honest work and industry, gained a competence as well as the respect of all those within the range of his acquaintance.

Decedent was born in Sullivan* County, N. Y., Dec. 22, 1824. and was therefore
just 80 years of age at the time of his death. He, was married to Miss Lucy M. Childs at Canastota, Madison County, N. Y.

He is survived by his wife and three children, the children being Dana G. of Stillwater; Oklahoma; Ida F., at home, and Mrs. William [Ella] Magee, living one mile north of the old home.

The news of his death, while it had been expected by all who knew of his condition, has cast a shadow of gloom over the entire neighborhood and the sorrowing family have the sympathy of all.

* Black Hawk County History has him born in Chenango County, New York, but attended schools in Sullivan County where his parents moved when he was a youth. He was married in 1852 to Lucy M. Child** in Madison County, New York where she was born Feb. 26, 1833.
