MRS. C. D. CASS
DIES IN CAPITAL
RITES THURSDAY

Pneumonia Attack After Dec. 5 Surgery Fatal; Resident 59 Years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Claude D. Cass, 64, of 205 Prospect Avenue, who died of pneumonia in a Washington, D. C., hospital Saturday night, are tentatively scheduled for Thursday here, members of the family announced Monday.

Mrs. Cass, a resident of Waterloo since 1884, in recent years had divided her time between Waterloo and Washington where her husband was general counsel for the American Transit association.

Her death, at 10:45 p. m. Saturday in Emergency hospital, Washington, followed a major operation she underwent Dec. 5. Pneumonia developed a week ago as a post surgery complication.

A prayer service was held at Washington Monday afternoon, following which the body, accompanied by the widower, will be brought by rail to Waterloo and to the O'Keefe & Towne funeral home. Funeral arrangements were pending Monday here.

Born Sept. 30, 1879, at New Athens, O., Leila Florence Bentley was the daughter of Solomon M. and Ida Stuart Bentley. She came to Waterloo in 1884 with her parents, attended public schools here and was graduated from East High School in 1896.

On Sept. 3, 1900, she was married to Claude D. Cass. During the past 15 years they had resided here at 205 Prospect Avenue and at the Shoreham Hotel, in Washington, when he was in the capital on business. Mr. Cass is also chairman of the board of the Iowa Warehouse Co. here.

For many years Mrs. Cass was active here in Christ Episcopal Church, Chapter Z of the P. E. O. and in the Waterloo Woman's club.

Surviving her, besides the widower, are three sons: Robert B., 1013 Steely Street, president-manager of the Iowa Warehouse Co.; Lt. Comdr. Richard S. Cass, Tulsa, Okla., recently returned from navy duty in the Solomons and at present stationed in Seattle. Wash., and Cpl. Donald L., of Des Moines, now in training at Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Mrs. Arta Bentley McCune, who has made her home here at 205 Prospect Avenue; and six grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were a brother, Solomon, jr., in 1889; her father, in 1933; the mother, in May, 1943; and two daughters, Martha, and Dorothy Lee, who died in infancy.
