Kenneth C. Schanke, 79, of Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at his home of cancer.

He was born April 30, 1926, in Independence, son of Lloyd and Eva Hurd Schanke. He married Carma Stemen in 1947, and they later divorced. He married Marion Holub Aug. 16, 1976, in Galena, Ill.

Mr. Schanke retired from Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, after 35 years of employment.

Survived by his wife; four sons, Larry (Marion) of Dell City, Okla., Bob (Loretta) of Green Forrest, Ark., Bill (Mary) of Evansdale and Scott (Tina) of Dodgeville, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Harley Holub of Sacramento, Calif., Bud Holub of Des Moines and Myron Holub of Oregon; three stepdaughters, Connie Bartels of Waterloo, Cheryl Lamborn of Bartlesville, Okla., and Cindy Sanchez of Mesa, Ariz.; 14 stepgrandchildren; 20 stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd of Onalaska, Wis.; and a sister; Pauline Donahue of Independence.

Preceded in death by a brother, Bob; two sisters, Edna Cornwell and Betty Stephenson; and a stepgrandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, with burial in Wilson Cemetery, both in Independence. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Reiff Funeral Home, Independence, is in charge of arrangements.
