WATERLOO - Robert T. Sayler, 80, of Des Moines, formerly of Waterloo and Hudson, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, at Taylor House (Hospice), Des Moines, of cancer.

He was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Waterloo, son of Theodore and Lula Meyer Sayler. He married Miriam "Mim" Andersen March 4, 1950, in Cedar Falls.

He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1942 and attended South Dakota School of Mines. Mr. Sayler was vice president and commercial loan officer at National Bank of Waterloo for 36 years, retiring in 1978. After leaving the bank, he owned and operated Denver Hardware Store in Denver, Saylers Southside Mart in Hudson and Bob Sayler Realty.

He also was a rural mail carrier for 13 years out of La Porte City, retiring from there in 1991. Sayler served in the U.S Army with the 381st Combat Engineers in the European theater during World War II.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Janice (David) Petheram of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Laura "Charlie" Petheram and Emily "Toots" Petheram; a grandson, Scott "Scooter" Petheram; and a sister, Arlene Shepard of Newberry, Fla.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, with flag presentation by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home.
