LA PORTE CITY - Walter W. Schwarz, 78, of Chandler, Okla., formerly of La Porte City, died Sunday, Sept. 4, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Jesup, son of William and Minnie Tyler Schwarz. He married Marilyn B. Yarrington on Aug. 2, 1947, in Waterloo. She died in the accident on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005.

Mr. Schwarz was employed with Rath Packing Co. in the smoke house, retiring in 1982. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, Jeff (fiancee Brenda Hammons) of Chandler; two daughters, Sharon (Steven) Soy of Cedar Falls and Cris (Rick) Drahos of Evansdale; two grandchildren, Gary Buck and Tami Havlik; and three brothers, Bill of Missouri, Leonard of Seabring, Fla., and Don of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Herb; and a sister, Edith Sonksen.

Joint memorial services: for Mr. Schwarz and his wife will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heartland Community Church, with inurnment in West View Cemetery, both La Porte City. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the church. His body has been cremated. Graveside military rites will be conducted by La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post 207 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Normandy Post 3983. Huisman Funeral Home, La Porte City, is in charge of the arrangements.
