WASHBURN - Harold J. "Smitty" Smith, 90, of Washburn, died at home Friday, May 9, 2014, of cancer.

He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Waterloo, son of Harold Louis and Miriam Eleanor Fifield Smith. He married Betty Jean Friedley on June 23, 1947, in Kansas City, Kan.; she died July 28, 2000.

Smitty graduated from Waterloo East High School and served in the U.S. Navy on the submarine USS Piranha during World War II. He worked for Rath Packing Co. for 43 years, retiring as a bacon trucker.

Survived by two sons, J. Kirby (Cheryl) of Des Moines and Kelly Lee of Charles City; two daughters, Vicki (Steven) Hickman of Lovilia and Cheryl (Stephen) White of Decorah; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory; and a daughter, Sandra Blankenship.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Katharine Graham Pahl Chapel at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, with burial in the cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by U.S. Navy Funeral Honors, American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, Waterloo.
