EVANSDALE - A Waterloo woman who died after her van plunged into a private lake last month had a seizure disorder.

But authorities haven't been able to determine if Janice Marie Alderman's medical condition caused her to lose control of her vehicle.

A medical examiner ruled Alderman, a 52-year-old grandmother of three who ran a home day care, died of accidental drowning July 21, according to a recently filed death certificate.

The certificate listed Alderman's seizure disorder as a "significant condition" in her death.

Evansdale Police Chief Mike Burke, who investigated the accident, said he can't conclusively say a seizure was behind the accident.

He said the state is running further medical tests that could shed more light on this question.

Alderman was coming from her mother's place in Gilbertville and was traveling west on Interstate 380 when her van darted across the grass median and in front of an eastbound semi truck.

The van narrowly missed the truck, crashed down an embankment and through a field fence before splashing into Eagle Lake.

Other motorists rushed after Alderman, but the van sank in the lake before they were able to help her. Recovery divers found her inside the vehicle in about 15 feet of water later that morning.
