Flier Herman Killed; Second in Family

Second Lt. Joel G. Herman, 21, was killed in action May 27 on Luzon while serving as a P-38 pilot, according to word received Saturday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Herman, 1302 Forest Avenue.

His brother, Second Lt. Kenneth J. Herman, was killed in action Oct. 22, 1944, while flying as a Mustang fighter pilot somewhere over Germany.

Joel Herman was born Sept. 13, 1923, on a farm north of Dunkerton, Ia., and in 1941 was graduated from Traer, Ia., high school where he was awarded the American Legion scholarship award.

He attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, for two years before entering service in February, 1943. He has been overseas since March, 1945, in the Seventh fighter squadron, 49th fighter group, based in the Philippines.

Surviving besides his parents, is one sister, Doris, at home, paternal grandmother, Mrs. Gust Herman, Dunkerton, and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Owens, who live north of Waterloo.
