WATERLOO - Josephine M. Mahnke, 89, of Waterloo, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

She was born Oct. 13, 1916, in Quasqueton, daughter of Edward and Ella Sherrer Turner. She married Lorenz Mahnke on Dec. 22, 1938. He died Aug. 31, 1990.

Mrs. Mahnke graduated from high school in Quasqueton, then attended Pitzie's Beauty School in Waterloo. She owned and operated beauty salons in Quasqueton, Jesup and at the Black's building in Waterloo. She later returned to Pitzie#,s Beauty School as an instructor. Over the years she was a member of the Royal Neighbors, and enjoyed singing with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Sweet Adelines, the Mother's Chorus of Waterloo and the Metropolitan Chorale. She also loved to play the violin.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth of Eau Claire, Wis., Ronnie of Vinton and Stephen of Garland, Texas; a daughter, Beverly Peterson of Waterloo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Turner of Sandwich, Ill., and Phillip Turner of Clinton; and a sister, Lois Rosenthal of Deland, Fla.

Preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Francis and Jay Turner; and a sister, Geraldine.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, with burial in Quasqueton Cemetery, Quasqueton. Public visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

A memorial fund has been established.
