WATERLOO - Mavis L. “Babe” Versluis, 76, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital.

She was born May 17, 1937, in Reedsburg, Wis., daughter of Everett M. and Ruth V. Hitchcock Hopper. She married Jerald E. Phillis Jr. on Feb. 13, 1954 in Waterloo; they were later divorced. She then married Robert H. "Bob" Versluis on April 21, 1984, in Rock Springs, Wis.

She graduated from Waterloo's West High School. She worked for John Deere Engine Works for 20 years, retiring in 1997.

Survived by her husband; two sons, Arnold Phillis of Fredericksburg and Anthony Phillis of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; three daughters, Anita (Brian) Vanous of Quasqueton and Annette Jurgensen and Angela Thurman, both of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Sheryl Versluis of Independence; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Keith E.A. (Gladys) Hopper of Washburn.

Preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Roger Hopper in infancy.

Memorial visitation: will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, with inurnment at a later date in the Waterloo Cemetery.
