GILBERTVILLE - Barbara E. Schares, 94, formerly of Gilbertville, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center, Waterloo.

She was born Sept. 16, 1913, in Black Hawk County, daughter of Theodore and Barbara Falk Becker. She married Paul William Schares on Feb. 5, 1936, in Gilbertville. He died June 20, 1995.

Mrs. Schares and her husband owned and operated a farm in the Gilbertville area, retiring in 1973, when they moved into Gilbertville.

Survivors include two sons, William "Bill" of Orlando, Fla., and Eugene of Gilbertville; four daughters, Shirley (Tom) Delagardelle of Gilbertville, Joanie (Dick) Kerns and Claudette (Dick) Bedard, both of Waterloo, and Paulette (Bob) Sadler of Washburn; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Schares of Independence; a son-in-law, Mike (Barb) Driscoll of Washburn; 31 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Wagner of Waterloo; and a sister-in-law, Angeline Becker of Independence.

Preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Paul Jr. and Bernard; a daughter, Connie Driscoll; a son-in-law, Dave Kafer; a grandson, Tony Kerns; a great-great-grandson, Brandon Curl; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, Matt and Katie, Mike and Lil, Joe and Mayme, Servus and Cecelia, Arnold and Dorothy and Ted Becker; and three sisters and four brothers-in-law, Julia and Aloy Oberhauser, Gertrude and Jack Funfsinn, Christina and Bert Wester and Leo Wagner.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with rosaries at 4 and 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Bosco System.
