Pfc. George R. Dalton, former Black Hawk County farm, worker, has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, in Sicily, according to word received by his sister, Miss Dorothy May Dalton,
1724 Black Hawk Street.

The citation is for Dalton's feat against the enemy in the vicinity of Gela, Sicily, July 11, 1943. It reads:
"When nine enemy tanks penetrated the right flank of his company during an important battle and threatened the position of his entire battalion, Private Dalton, on his own initiative, in the face of hostile artillery and small arms fire, assisted in firing a captured enemy anti-tank gun. The effective fire of this weapon destroyed two tanks and compelled the others to withdraw."
