Lawrence "Larry" Howard Schroeder, 68, of 240 Grand Ave., Marion, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in his home after a brave battle against leukemia. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, starting at 1 p.m., at the American Legion Post 298 in Marion, with services including military honors starting at 3 p.m.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 46 years, Dixie (Bolt) Schroeder; two sons, Larry (Kim) of Chillicothe, Ill., and Steve of Marion; two daughters, Maria (David Hale) of Coralville and Sue (Tom Anderson) of Ely, Minn.; three sisters, Alice (Quinter) Lichty of Waterloo, Lois Turner of Janesville, Wis., and Ruth (Bob) Prins of Waterloo; one brother, Dennis (Joan) of Centennial, Colo.; two brothers-in-law, Roger Schons of Minnesota and Robert Bolt of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Zachary, Lindsey, Hannah, McKenzie and Wyatt, all of Chillicothe, Ill., and Kathy and Bill of Marion.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ronetta (Stromer) Schroeder; his mother-in-law, Orleen (Berger-Bolt) Moubray and stepfather-in-law, Wilmer, of Toledo, Iowa; father-in-law, Robert Bolt of Oregon; three sisters, Donna Schons, Janet Leckness and Delores Bowers; two brothers, Clifford and Stan; and one granddaughter, Annalissa Grace Schroeder.

Larry was born April 19, 1936, in Waterloo. He graduated from Orange Township Consolidated Schools in Black Hawk County. He then enlisted in the Army and served with Special Forces. Upon his completion of his service to our country, he attended UNI (State Teachers College). After earning his degree and teaching certificate he became a member of the Linn-Mar High School faculty in 1962. Throughout his 30-plus-year career with Linn-Mar he taught social studies and foreign language. He was active in coaching, including head coach for several girls basketball and softball teams. He also drove a school bus from the time he started with Linn-Mar.

Larry retired from full-time teaching in 1992, however continued his involvement with the educational system through substitute teaching for Linn-Mar, bus driving, sports statistician, and coaching the bowling team. On four occasions he had chaperoned students to Siberia. During these trips he made several friends in Russia, who he was honored to host when they visited the United States.

He thoroughly enjoyed his career and life which included teaching, coaching, interacting with students and their families on his bus route, fishing, traveling, gardening, and his summers in North Buena Vista, Iowa. His life was much enriched through his involvement with students, the American Legion, family, friends and the countless hearts and minds he touched.
