WATERLOO -- Helen E. Duven 90, of Waterloo, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Lakeview Landing of Friendship Village of natural causes.

She was born June 6, 1923, in Cherokee, daughter of Oscar and Emma Okerstrom Karlson. She married Donald Duven on June 6, 1946.

Helen graduated from Iowa State University in 1945 from the College of Home Economics as a dietitian. She worked in the dietary department at the University of Iowa and later with the Maytag Co. in Newton. Helen was a homemaker for most of her life, caring for her husband and children. She was a member of Chapter Z, P.E.O. and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.

Survived by her husband; two sons, Doug (Dawn) of Waterloo and Bill (Susan) of Monument, Colo.; a daughter, Diann (John) Duvenez of Oak Harbor, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Jennifer(Dan) Hucker, Emily Duven, Ben Duven, Sean(Amber)Bovee, Ryan Duvenez, Allison Duvenez, Alex Duven, Katie Duven and Madeline Duven; four great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Otto Schneider of N. Sioux City, S.D.; and a sister-in-law, Fran Karlson of Cherokee.

Preceded in death by a sister, Marion Schneider; and a brother, Carl Karlson.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church Chapel, with inurnment at a later date. Visitation will be for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Helen lived her life devoted to her family. She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends.
