Ruth Martelle Loeb, 85, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center of cancer.

She was born March 23, 1919, in Earlham, the daughter of the Rev. Edwin and Evalina Wood Hignett. She graduated from Pierson High School in 1937. She attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C., and American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Ruth married John Loeb on Dec. 28, 1940, in Arlington. She was employed as a medical transcriptionist at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City and Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, retiring in 1981. Ruth brought much joy to her family and friends, and she will always be remembered for the sparkle in her eyes and her sweet smile. Ruth was always a giver and donated her body to The University of Iowa College of Medicine.

Survivors include her beloved husband, John, of 64 years; a daughter, Sharon (Richard) Mueller of Guatemala; a son, John Edwin "Jack" (Joyce) Loeb of Germany; three grandchildren, Paul (Elizabeth) Mueller of Austin, Texas, Kathy (Pedro) Cabrera of Guatemala and Benjamin Loeb of Guntersville, Ala.; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Michelle Mueller, Victoria Loeb, and Ricky, Alexana and Analisa Cabrera.

Preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Travis P. Hignett and Forest Hignett; and a son, Kenneth Allen Loeb.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the Central Christian Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be given to the Central Christian Church, Covenant Medical Center or the charity of donor's choice.
