WATERLOO - Daniel Mixdorf, 72, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at Allen Hospital emergency room of cancer.

Daniel Paul Mixdorf was born on his familys farm in Black Hawk County northeast of Waterloo on September 30, 1932. He was the youngest of three boys, born to Arthur and Vallie (Tribon) Mixdorf. They lived on the farm until it was sold,. Then they moved to Waterloo, where he has lived ever since. He went to a one-room schoolhouse in Bennington Township until sixth grade, then Dunkerton until eighth grade, and he graduated from Waterloo East High School.

Dan married Maxine Schumacher June 6, 1954; Maxine passed away August 7, 2002. Together, they raised four children who settled all over the United States: Susan and Stacey Harris live in Virginia Beach with their two children, Shane & Sabre, Randy and Tammy Mixdorf live in Higley, AZ, with their son J.J., Debbie & Frank Failla live in Mesa, AZ, and Dave & Susan Mixdorf live in Lenexa, KS, with their daughter, Leah. A fifth grandchild, Capt. Chris and Tonya Menuey, live in California with their son, Michael. A sixth grandchild, Warrant Officer 2 Tom and Trisha Berglund, live in Hawaii with their three children, Ethan, Ellie and Estoria. Dan also is survived by his brother and his wife, David and Phyllis of Dewar, Iowa, and a special friend, Norma Sulentic, of Waterloo.

Dan had been a licensed private pilot since 1996 and flew whenever he got the chance. He had been involved in church activities at Concordia Lutheran Church in Waterloo and held every office in the church other than secretary and treasurer. He was also a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and enjoyed people, traveling, sightseeing and flying.

Dan retired from U S West Telephone Co. after 37 years of service. He also retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves Seabee det. 1325 as a chief petty officer with over 34 years service. Dan began working at Parrott & Wood-Chapel of Memories in May 1989 and was working up until he was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in St. Benningtons Lutheran Cemetery, rural Waterloo. Military honors will be performed at the committal service. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, where there will be an 8:30 p.m. Fraternal Order of Eagles service.
