[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, February 27, 1884, Waterloo, Iowa]

DIED.—Samuel Cook, a former resident of this city, died at Reinbeck on Monday of last week, after a painful illness of quite a long duration. He leaves a wife and one son.

Since the above was put in type we have received the following obituary notice:

Samuel Cook was born in Bedford County, Penn., on the 23d of April, 1842, and was therefore in his forty-second year. He enlisted in the late war at Cumberland, Maryland, on the 13th day of September, 1861, serving nearly three years, during which time he received injuries from which he never recovered. After the close of the war he made his home in Stephenson County, Illinois, near the old home of his wife. He was married Nov. 18th, 1869, and moved from Stephenson County, Illinois to Independence, Iowa, remaining there two years, after which he moved to Waterloo and opened a butter and egg depot, and was a resident of this city until within the last eight months, when he has been with his wife's brothers at Marshalltown and Reinbeck. In the latter place he had been nearly four months prior to his death.

He leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.

Mr. Cook has been an invalid for nearly ten years, but was a silent and patient sufferer, a kind and loving husband and an indulgent father.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church, Wednesday, Feb. 20, Rev. Geo. E. Shear conducting the services. The following members of Wilson Post, G. A. R., of Grudny Center, attended the funeral of their comrade: C. W. Gibson, Geo. F. Wass, J. L. Moor, J. S. B. Thompson, W. C. Shimer, Grundy Center; J. H. Chanbers, F. D. Lepper, Holland: James Fisher, Morrison; L. S. French, Reinbeck.
