LaVerne R. "Vern" Miller, 76, of Waterloo, died Sunday July 29, 2007, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born July 12, 1931 in Waterloo, son of James and Dorothy Whitson Miller. He graduated from Waterloo West High School and a Des Moines Barber College. He married Janette Gatrell on May 23, 1953, at Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo.

He was employed with Simcox Barber Shop and later was employed with the Waterloo Courier for 40 years retiring in 1996. Mr. Miller was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church since 1962. He loved his famly church all sports and traveling. He enjoyed golfing in his later years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, James (Mary) Miller of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Lee (Ina) Miller of Madison, Illinois; a daughter Cynthia (Kevin) McCormick of Midland, Michigan; 13 grandchildren and one great granddaughter; two brothers, Rex (Mary) Brice of Gilbertville and Rick (Kathy) Dunlevy of Cedar Falls; a sister, Colleen (Ned) Johnson of Cedar Falls and a special aunt Darlyne Slade of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a daughter Nina Nemmers.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at St. Edwards Catholic Church with entombment in the Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Public visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.
