WATERLOO - Sandra Ellen Rottinghaus Kipp Franken, 74, of Waterloo, died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at UnityPoint-Allen Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 19, 1940, in Waterloo, the daughter of Firmin and Alma Gales Rottinghaus. She married James J. Kipp on Jan. 28, 1961, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. He died June 28, 2001. She married Bennett Franken on Oct. 30, 2004, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville.

Sandra was the Valedictorian for the class of 1958 at Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville. She attended Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, from 1958-1960. She completed a one year internship at the American Society of Clinical Pathology with a MT designation. She finished her degree at the University of Northern Iowa in microbiology in 1964. She was employed as a medical technologist at Allen Hospital for 43 years. She earned the first area certification to conduct PKU testing.

Survivors include her husband, Bennett of Waterloo; five brothers, Jim (Karen) Rottinghaus of La Porte City, John (Dessie) Rottinghaus of Waterloo, Michael (Patricia) Rottinghaus of Waterloo, Steven (Karen) Rottinghaus of Brighton, Mich., and Gerald Rottinghaus of Waterloo; a sister, Cheryl (Bob) Kolar of Cedar Rapids; two stepdaughters, Debra (Brent) Fisher of Aplington and Darla (Mark) Williford of Beaumont, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a rosaries at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Visitation also one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the family.

Sandra had many talents and interests. She was a Black Hawk County 4-H leader and judge at the county fair level. She raised and showed show dogs for over 40 years. Her favorite breeds were Irish Setters, Manchester Terriers, Brussels Griffons, and Welsh Springer Spaniels. She was past president of the Waterloo Kennel Club. She was a talented seamstress and quilter and was past president of Keepsake Quilters Guild. She fashioned many fabric gifts for family and friends. For dog shows she also made award and raffle items for a number of local and national shows. She was interested in floral gardening and enjoyed her multiple flower beds and working outdoors.
