ELK RUN HEIGHTS -- Dale R. Nichols, 77, of Elk Run Heights, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of complications of Parkinson’s disease.

He was born Jan. 17, 1937, in Waterloo, son of Leslie Harold and Helen Mae Cheney Nichols. He married Velma Marie Scobee on July 1, 1960, at Burton Avenue Baptist Church in Waterloo. They were the first couple married in the new church.

He was a graduate of Waterloo West High School. Dale worked for John Deere and Co. in Waterloo for more than 30 years, retiring in January 1993. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Dale was an active member of Burton Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee and head usher. He also taught Sunday school and helped with AWANAS Club.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Terri Derifield of Elk Run Heights; six grandchildren, Tim (Cori) Derifield of Missouri, Daniel Derifield of Greene, Dana Graveman and Tina, Diana and David Derifield, all of Waterloo; three great-grandchildren, Sadie Derifield, Loralie and Lincoln Graveman and one on the way; a brother, Wayne of Florida; and a sister, Norma (Robert) Emmert of Hudson.

Preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Donna Mae Nichols; and a sister-in-law, Margarita Nichols.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Burton Avenue Baptist Church, Waterloo, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel in Waterloo and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
