CHAS. G. CRABTREE DIES OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN FALL

Well Known Civil War Veteran, 76, Was Knocked Off Ladder By Auto.

Charles G. Crabtree, 76, Civil war veteran and resident of Waterloo for many years, died at 9 a.m. today from the injuries received a week ago when he fell from a ladder that was knocked down by an automobile being backed out of a garage by Dr. D. C. Huntoon at 622 Fletcher Avenue.

Little hope of recovery had been entertained by physicians and death occurred at Presbyterian Hospital without his fully regaining consciousness.

"Charlie" Crabtree was the youngest member of Robert Anderson post G. A. R. and one of the post's most active veterans. When the war broke out he was a mere boy. Twice he ran away from his Wisconsin home to enter the army before he realized his ambition to become a soldier in defense of his country. The eventful day came when he was accepted at Plattville, Wis., in 1864, at the age of 16 for enlistment in Co. H. Forty-fourth Wisconsin infantry.

Soon after coming to Waterloo about 20 years ago, Crabtree enrolled in the G. A. R. post here. since then he had been a familiar figure at every patriotic demonstration in the city. He was elected commander of the post several times and was always looked to for leadership. At every encampment at the state department he was a delegate whose advice was sought on all important matters.

With his comrades and members of the other patriotic organizations, Mr. Crabtree had joined in forming plans for Memorial Day and was to have headed the parade as Marshall of the day.

Charles Crabtree was born Jan. 20, 1848 in Grant County, Wisconsin.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Guy, Mizpah, Minn., and George, Spencer, Iowa; three daughters: Mrs. P. A. Manning, Waterloo; Mrs. Ouida Fabriz and Mrs. Letta Hendrick, both of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Mrs. Lou Barnett, Aredale, Iowa, and a brother, Robert Crabtree, Memphis, Tenn.

The body was taken to the O'Keefe & Towne Morturary, pending arrangements for the funeral.
