CEDAR FALLS - Casper "Cap" Benjamin Schmitt, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes.

He was born March 30, 1916, in Waterloo, son of Louis and Theresa Muhlenhaupt Schmitt. He married Evelyn Fernau Feb. 20, 1939, in Waterloo. She died Feb. 6, 1979. He then married Leona Helena Simmons Dec. 26, 1981, in Cedar Falls.

Mr. Schmitt was employed as a conductor for the Illinois Central Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1967.

Survived by his wife of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Jane (Chris) Batley of St. Cloud, Fla., and Joan (Charles) Butterfield of Sarasota, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Pamela (Jack) Kapnick of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild.

Preceded in death by a sister Velma Brousseau.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of donors choice.
