TRAER - Richard E. McDaniel, 89 of Traer, died Monday, March 3, 2014, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born April 17, 1924, in Waterloo, son of Ora and Goldie Figge McDaniel. He married Grace Hite on Dec. 17, 1947 in Galena, Ill.

Richard graduated from Waterloo West High School and received his associate's degree in mathematics from the International College of Mathematics. He served in the 17th Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart.

Richard was employed with Robinson Engineering as a civil engineer for 25 years, retiring in 1981.

Survived by his wife; a son, Richard A. of Clutier; two daughters, Kristin (Ernie) Jensen of Janesville and Karolyn (Dave) Haugebak of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Tony Haugebak, Kara (James) Davis and Zachary (Missy) Brown; six great-grandchildren, Austin, Summer, Jackson, Isabella, Ashlynn and Barrett.

Preceded in death by: a son, Michael; three sisters, Virginia Saylor, Helen Dirks and Maxine Peppler; and two brothers, Ralph McDaniel and Raymond in infancy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo and Evansdale AMVETS Posts 19 and 31 with flag presentation by the Iowa Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also for an hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Richard loved all music, especially playing guitar. He enjoyed staying active in hunting, fishing, water skiing. He won several state awards in archery and was an avid gun collector.
