CEDAR FALLS -- Curtiss “Budd” Curttright, of Cedar Falls, passed away at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the age of 83 from Alzheimers.

Budd was born in Cedar Rapids on Aug. 11, 1930, to Gerald Easton and Bertha Mae Strother Curttright He married JoAnn Taylor in 1949. She preceded him in death in 1999. He later married Sharon Harrington Puls at St. Edward's Church, Waterloo.

After graduating from Grapevine, Texas, in 1948, he went on to attend Texas A&M where he played football. He continued his civil engineering studies at Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and after training at Fort Bliss, Texas, was stationed at Bremerton, Wash. Upon discharge from the army, he worked for Strother Construction, living in Eldon until 1965 and then relocated to Ottumwa where he remained with Strother until 1983, serving as vice president. He also attended Buena Vista College receiving a business degree. He then worked for Norris Construction for several years and moved to Cedar Falls in 1990 in the capacity of Public Works Director until retiring in 2003.

He was very active in the First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls, serving as an elder and a member of the choir. He later became active in St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, serving as lector, Ecumenical Minister and sang in the Resurrection Choir.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed traveling to the 48 contiguous states on his Gold Wing motorcycle and later visited Hawaii and Alaska. He achieved private and commercial pilot ratings and worked as company pilot for Strother Construction as well as flying children to Shrine Hospitals during his many years with the El Kahir Shrine. He was an avid ham radio operator and a member of Cedar Falls Lions Club. He also volunteered for many years at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Paul (Kristie) of San Saba, Texas, and Karen (Craig) Bauerle of West Des Moines; four stepsons, David (Michelle), Scott (Julie), Bryan (Amy) and Shaun (Sarah), all of Wisconsin; five grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Gloria Powers of Denton, Texas; and three nephews.

He was predeceased in death by his first wife, Jo Ann, and his grandson-in-law, Chris Blake.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in Memory Lawn Cemetery, Ottumwa. Full military rites will be conducted at the church by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service, 300 West Ridgeway, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation also one hour prior to services at the church

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Newell Post or the Alzheimer’s Association.
