CEDAR FALLS - Grace Leinen, 88, of Grinnell, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service for Mrs. Leinen will be at10:30 a.m. today at Grinnell First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Kirsten Kelpfer officiating. A second memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with the Rev. Tim Schoepf officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Cedar Falls.

Memorial contributions may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, Grinnell, or Grinnell Regional Hospice.

The daughter of James and Gertrude Hanson Bergstrom, she was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Cedar Falls. She was raised on a farm near Cedar Falls and was a 1936 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. She received a teaching certificate at Iowa State Normal School, Cedar Falls, and taught for several years at Mechanicsville, Iowa. She later received a BA degree in education and an MA degree in specialist reading and language arts. She taught for 30 years in the Cedar Falls School District and later taught at the University of Northern Iowa. She retired in 1985. She was married to Gordon "Bill" Leinen on Dec. 26, 1941, in Cedar Falls. Following his death in 1966, she married Arthur Heimann on June 23, 2003, in Cedar Falls. The couple made their home in Grinnell.

Grace was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, and later First Presbyterian Church, Grinnell. She was a state and national president of the National Reading Association, past president of the Alpha Delta Kappa and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and PEO. She was also a director of Stephen Ministry at Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur of Grinnell; three children and their spouses, Gary and Sarah Leinen of Bozeman, Mont., Kim and Ray Heimann of Newton and Scott Leinen of Pella; five stepchildren and their spouses, Ray and Kim Heimann of Newton, Nancy and Gary Sayers of Centerville, Jo and Rob Schreck of Manchester, Mark and Teri Heimann of Dike and Ed Heimann and his friend Sherri Houghton of Superior, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
