WATERLOO - Michael Elliott Broell, 64, of Monterey, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died at home Monday, Feb. 24, 2014.

He was born May 9, 1949, in Waterloo, son of Jack and Dorothy Broughton Broell. He married Satu Viitanen on Aug. 4, 1979, in Finland. They later divorced.

Michael graduated from Waterloo West High School. He attended the University of Iowa for a short time, and then studied abroad for several years. He was self-employed and owned and operated several businesses in California, including a Classic Car Co., Laplandia Toy Co., Cherry Bean Coffeehouse & Roastery and a framing studio.

Survived by three sisters, Marcia Broell, Cathy Webber and Micky (Bill) Shelton, all of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Private memorial service: will be held at a later date in Salinas, Calif.
