Funeral arrangements are pending at the Beatty-Beurle Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, for Leland J. Phillips, 53, of Cedar Rapids, formerly operator of the Kirby Vacuum Cleaner agency here who died in Cedar Rapids at 8 a.m. Sunday of a heart attack.

He was born near Jesup in Black Hawk County, the son of John P. and Lena Schmidt Phillips. Mr. Phillips moved to Waterloo as a young man. He married Ann Wiczorek of Minneapolis on March 29, 1944.

Surviving are his wife; four children, Ronald of Davenport, Barbara, a student al the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls; Craig and ; Debra at home; four brothers, Lawrence of 2010 Independence Ave., Edward of 321 Bratnober St., Alfred of 1155 Williston Ave., and Francis of 111 Wallace Place; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Levendusky of 524 Johnson St., and Mrs. Juanita McNally of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in World War II. He received the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action in France. After the war, he and his wife resided in Waterloo. They later moved to Cedar Rapids, where he has been operating the Kirby agency.
