Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church for A. J. (Tony) Merfeld, 73, of 1727 W. 3rd St., who died at Schoitz Memorial Hospital at 9:45 p.m. Friday of carcinoma.

The Rev. C. J. Raker, pastor, will officiate. Rosary services will be at the Oppold Funeral Home tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and at 8 p.m. tomorrow by the parish and Holy Name Society. Friends who wish may contribute to the Columbus High School Memorial Fund in his memory. Friends may call at the Oppold Funeral Home after 2 p.m. today.

Mr. Merfeld was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Elks.

He was born on May 2, 1898, at Marble Rock, the son of John J. and Catherine Kramer Merfeld. He married Leona Greiner on Sept. 25, 1934, in Waterloo. He operated a grain elevator at Orchard for many years until 1943 when he moved to Waterloo.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Robert of Bloomington Wis.; one daughter, Mrs. James Yagla of 151 Woodlawn Road; nine grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. Christine Staudt of Stacyville, Mrs. Barbara Staudt and Mrs. Don Krambeer of Marble Rock, and Mrs. Ann Kobbermann of Charles City; four brothers, Merrick of Nashua, Leander of Rockford and Edward and Bernard, both of Marble Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
