[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, February 16, 2014]

Larry Velasquez, 62, of Cedar Falls, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, after his valiant fight with cancer.

Born in Chicago, to Lucio and Lucy Velasquez, Larry is survived by his wife Christine, children Genesis, Loren and Jordan, mother-in-law Helen, granddaughter Emery "Honey Boo Boo," his five siblings and extended loving family, future daughters Millie and Jordyn, his warmhearted community, and loyal companion Jacque.

La'Ra, a veteran of the U.S. Army, was employed at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare for the last 15 years, and could been heard and seen at the Young Arena, Waterloo Bucks stadium, and any sports activity his children played in. He carried fishing poles, hockey gear, and musical instruments wherever he went, always ready for what life may bring.

La'Ra was a passionate man who brought humor and creativity wherever he went. He not only put a smile on your face, but would bring you to tears with laughter when you needed it the most. He had the ability to instantly make you feel like family. Even though cancer cross-checked La'Ra, his strong will to live, his unwaivering faith in God, and the footprints he has left on this earth and in all of our hearts helped him skate to The Victory in the final period.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at Heartland Vineyard Church. The address is 1405 Greenhill Road, Cedar Falls 50613; (319) 266-4673.
