Lavern “Toby” Joseph Lentz, 92, of Elma, formerly of Waterloo and Dewar, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Elma.

He was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Fillmore, son of Lawrence and Bridget Lentz. He married Jeanette Frances Brennan on April 23, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank; she preceded him in death.

Toby graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1939. He farmed near Elma until the early 1950s and then was employed at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He also had worked part time for Dewar Elevator, Petersen-Tietz Florist and an Evansdale grocery store until full retirement. He was a member of St John’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, and St Francis Catholic Church, Barclay.

Survived by three daughters, Jean Hilbert of Waverly, Janice Torrey of Waterloo and Cheri Riggins of La Porte City; two sons, Larry of Davenport and William of Madison, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie, Francis, Ed and Don; and a sister, Marie (Robert) Brennan.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church, preceded by an hour of visitation, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Elma. Conway-Markham Funeral Home, Elma, is in charge of arrangements.
