WATERLOO - Mary E. Altenburg, 88, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 21, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

She was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Waterloo, daughter of Ralph and Rita Murphy Scroggy. She married Almer F. Altenburg on May 10, 1941, in Waterloo. He died March 27, 1986.

Mrs. Altenburg was employed with Northwestern Bell for 30 years, retiring in 1981.

Survived by a daughter, Sherry Cone of Great Falls, Mont.; two granddaughters, Cristin (Willie) Widhalm of Great Falls, Mon., and Kimary L. Cone of Marion; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Benjamin, Jackson and Nicholas Widhalm; a brother, James (Ardene) Scroggy of Blue Hill, Maine; and a sister, Martha (Jim) Karas of Grand Prairie, Texas.

Preceded in death by a brother, John Scroggy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
