WATERLOO - Neva Lena Marie Nielsen, 91, of Marion, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, Winslow House Care Center, Marion.

She was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Dysart, daughter of Ellis H. and Lena L. Hitt Stephens. She married Darwin O. Nielsen on Jan. 27, 1945, at Camp Lejune, N.C.; he died Sept. 30, 2012.

Mrs. Nielsen attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and was a teacher at River Hills School, Cedar Falls, for 15 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Grace Reformed Church.

Survived by a son, Steven (Kathy Sue) of Tooele, Utah; two daughters, Carol (Jim) Nesbit of rural Waterloo and Catherine (Kirk) Gray of rural Vinton; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Perry of La Porte City.

Preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Gerald, Delford, Stanley, Robert and Joe Stephens; and two sisters, Mary Timmerman and Ethel Stephens in infancy.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Reformed Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel and an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to her family for a memorial fund to benefit several organizations.
