Pauline R. “Polly” Lyon, 91, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Friendship Village Pavilion.

She was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Waterloo, the daughter of Clifford and Grace Tipton Dryden. She was a 1941 graduate of Waterloo East High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College. She married James Lyon on Aug. 11, 1953, in Waterloo.

She joined WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) during World War II and was stationed in Ottumwa, a primary flight training installation established during World War II to help rebuild the Naval Air Corps after Pearl Harbor. After the war she worked as a secretary in the Waterloo Public School System. She retired from the American Red Cross Blood Bank in 1984 after 20 years

She was an active member of Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church and served several years as president of the local United Methodist Women’s Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, James of Waterloo; one sister, Jean (Howard) Henderson of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Muriel Dryden and Marjorie Reinhold.

Family-directed memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Friendship Village Chapel. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel.

Memorials may be directed to Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church.
