CEDAR FALLS - Dale E. Nelson, 82, of Cedar Falls, died, Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Sartori Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 20, 1931, in Cedar Falls, the son of Carl F. and Alta K. (Hansen) Nelson. He married Shirley Othmer on May 13, 1951, in Cedar Falls.

Dale graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1949 and worked for many years as a carpenter for N.H. Hansen, Cedar Falls. He was an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 21 years in Cedar Falls, Oelwein and Waterloo, retiring in 1981.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Peter (friend Sandy) Nelson of Cedar Falls, Cy (Mona) Nelson of Decorah, Mark (Chris) Nelson of Ames and Wade (Sandra) Nelson of Los Osos, Calif.; a daughter, Krista Nelson of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren, Aaron Nelson, Rae Lynne (Justin) Chase, Carrissa (fiance Clint Cray) Nelson, Evan (Kari) Nelson, Seth (Jennifer) Nelson, Taylor (Kristen) Nelson, Harmony Nelson, Abraham Nelson, Indie Mae Nelson and Vanden Nelson; and five great-grandchildren, Xander and Saeli Chase, and Claire, Paige and Spencer Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Jana Elizabeth Nelson; a brother, Ross; and his mother and father-in-law, Ethel and Harold Othmer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Christian Crusaders.

As an avid outdoorsman, favorite activities included hunting, fishing and enjoying nature. His family cherishes the memories of their fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota. Dale and his wife Shirley, as pilots, loved flying their plane to Alaska, New York and traveled to many air shows. He was very involved in EAA Chapter 227 in Waterloo.
